Last Saturday, November 23rd, over 150 friends, family, community members and concerned activists turned out to portest the most recent killing by Cleveland police. Stanley Strnad, in his mid-twenties, was shot down and killed by four bullets to the back by officer Daniel Jopek the Friday before. Strnad was unarmed and was trying to get away from a cop who, as friends and family members spoke to at the rally, had it out for him.
Family members spoke into a bullhorn to address the grieving and angry crowd. At the spot where it happened, E. 152nd and Park Grove, Stanley's family made it clear this was a classic case of police brutality and cold blooded murder. They told the stories of how just recently this same cop had taken money from Stanley and was constantly harassing him. They demanded Jopek be fired from the force and locked up.
This wasn't even Jopek's first killing, however. In June of 2002 Jopek shot and killed another man, Keith Moore, on Lakeshore in the same neighborhood. Is it really a surprise anyone who knew his track record would try and run from him?
The October 22nd Coalition to Stop Police Brutality helped the family organize the protest. More actions are being considered as well. Some want to start a campaign to get Jopken fired and prosecuted. For more innformation or to get involved contact October 22nd @ 216-491-4595.
