WORKERS WORLD PARTY VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE TO VISIT OHIO, DENOUNCE "MILLIONAIRES DEBATE"
On Tuesday, October 5, in conjunction with the national debate, Workers World Party's Vice Presidential candidate Teresa Gutierrez will visit Cleveland. Gutierrez and the party's Presidential candidate, John Parker, are on the ballot or official write-in candidates in a number of states. (The candidates have not yet received confirmation in Ohio.) Gutierrez, a Latina lesbian who resides in New York, is a long-time activist "against war, racism, sexism, homophobia, and economic injustice -- a fighter for socialism."
"I plan to join with students, youth, and working class people in protesting this exclusionary millionaires' debating society," Gutierrez stated. "How can these two rich white politicians come to Cleveland, the poorest city in the entire country, and argue about how best to conquer the suffering people of Iraq? Who will speak for those who are paying the price for this war, through cutbacks in their basic necessities and with their lives? Our campaign strives to be that voice, a voice for full employment, a voice against racism, sexism, and anti-lesbian/gay/bi/trans bigotry, a voice to bring the troops home now!"
"These are the issues that, like myself and other antiwar candidates, are being kept out of this phony 'debates' "
In addition to being shut out of the Cheney-Edwards debate, Gutierrez was not invited to the third party candidates' debate taking place Tuesday evening at Baldwin-Wallace College, and her campaign has been denied a spot during the speakout sponsored by Case. "We resolutely object to these discriminatory exclusions, but our voice will be heard. We will take our campaign to the people on the streets," she stated.
The Parker-Gutierrez campaign will hold a pre-debate street meeting and leaflet distribution Tuesday at 2 PM at Daves Supermarket on 32nd and Payne. Gutierrez is also available for press interviews during the day. For more information or to schedule an interview contact the Workers World Party campaign at 216-531-4004/531-5188.
