This shit happens every day, it just happened to get caught on video this time. When will people realize cops do whatever the fuck they want and lie about it afterwards (the cops in this case lied in court, stating that the victim, Sayyid Qadri, was "resisting" and "assaulted a police officer".

Meanwhile, the cops involved have yet to be convicted of anything.

Two Evanston cops caught on video inside a police station bathroom with a bloodied, handcuffed West Rogers Park man each pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning to criminal charges stemming from the March 10 incident.

Gus Horemis, 42, an Evanston cop for 12 years, is charged with battery, official misconduct and obstructing justice. Mike Yorty, 27, an officer for 18 months, is charged with official misconduct, obstructing justice and perjury.

Cook County State's Attorney Dick Devine announced the charges at a press conference at the Cook County Administration Building at 26th and California.

"The great majority of those officers in Chicago and suburban Cook County . . . work with courage and integrity, but when a police officer crosses the line, we must take action," said Devine, standing next to Evanston Police Chief Frank Kaminski.

Horemis stopped Sayyid Qadri, 22, on March 10 for a traffic violation near 200 Ridge Rd. in Evanston. Horemis handcuffed Qadri and took him to the police station.

Prosecutors say Horemis took a handcuffed Qadri into a bathroom. Yorty followed. At some point, Horemis slammed Qadri's head into a wall, prosecutors say. After leaving the bathroom, Horemis "shoved the injured and bleeding Qadri onto a bench," authorities said. Horemis also allegedly pushed and choked Qadri.

Video cameras caught portions of the incident. Prosecutors said Horemis and Yorty gave false statements to investigators.

Qadri, who is suing the city of Evanston and the two officers, received six stitches for a large cut above his left eye.

Both Horemis and Yorty declined to talk to a reporter as they left the Cook County Courthouse Tuesday. Moran released the men on their own recognizance.

Horemis' attorney said Qadri's injuries were the result of a "scuffle," but "it wasn't the result of any actions of the Evanston police."

Horemis and Yorty face as much as five years in prison if convicted.

Perhaps a majority of police are “cool,” but the percentage of un-cool cops is much higher than the last contributor suggests. My personal experience and witnessing of others’ misfortunes leads me to believe that there is a very high percentage of “thug-cops” in almost every jurisdiction. It takes a certain mentality to even want to be a cop—narrow minded, paranoid, authoritarian, might-makes-right, needs to prove manhood by carrying a gun, self justification, etc. It’s easy for that type to justify their crossing the line. Then they have to stick up for each other, don’t you know...but for those lousy video cameras...#%$@!!

Just curious, how many policemen and women do you actually know? And if anyone who wants to be a cop is somehow mentally unstable and has a little man / woman complex what do you suggest we do for a police force?

1. Get rid of them all...
2. Only hire those willing to actually try to solve crimes (robbery, murder, assault, etc), not harass the citizenry to raise money of local municipalities, so they can build fancy new city halls, courthouses, jails, and have the latest in citizen harassment equipment/technology... in short, hire only those who will truly “serve and protect” and not be revenue sources for municipalities, etc. (Obviously this will require psychological testing too.)
3. Get rid of their guns -- get rid of all hand guns...they are for one purpose only...the killing of other human beings. And whether it’s police or civilians pulling the triggers, it’s still murder! Get rid of them (hand guns) all...

How do you prupose to hire these 'perfect' cops? Like with any job it is a little hard to know how someone will perform until they are actually on the street. And isn't it a little naive to assume most cops don't attempt to solve crimes? When you live in a country like the U.S.A. that has the second amendment and people own guns the Keystone Cop, England, cops with only night sticks and handcuffs thing isn't going to fly.

Also, you never answered my original question. How many policemen and women do you actually know?

Just wanted to interject a quick statistic from the Dept. of Justice.

Of people in federal prisons, only 3% of prisoners are there for aggravated assault, homocide, or kidnapping. This is contrary to the "law and order" image of prisons, suggesting they're all filled with murderers caught thanx to our trusty police.

Well over half the people are in for drug-related charges.
Many more (17% I think) are there for immigration violations.

In fact, over 85% of the crimes people were convicted of are poverty-related (drugs, immigration, possession of illegal weapon, theft, etc.).

This means that if the same people filling our prisons weren't born into poverty, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE BECOME CRIMINALS.

The Justice Dept. also has all kinds of statistics of prisoners, from gender and race to age and nationality. They do NOT, however, have statistics regarding the CLASS of people in prison. This is because the figure is startling, and suggests crime is a product of poverty, not "bad people". If we only threw "bad people" in prison, there should be a relatively equal number of rich and poor in prison. I mean, if you're a "bad person", you'll be "bad" whether you're rich or poor, right?

My point is that police aren't spending their days arresting murderers, kidnappers, or people who committ agg. assault, they spend their days harrassing poor people for committing crimes of poverty.

This also means that the overwhelming majority of people who suffer from police brutality have not even committed a violent offense. In most cases (i.e. drugs), there isn't even a victim. In the case of one Illinois resident, his crime was "illegal left turn".

Most upper-middle class folk, and even many middle-class folk, really think police are generally nice, generous people. And, as far as their experience go, they might be right. If you haven't been designated as a "criminal", cops can be some of the nicest people you'll meet.

It's a different story, however, particularly for poor black men or anyone they suspect of being "criminal".

How can "nice people" do such horrible things? How can a cop be super friendly one second and violently profile and brutalize people the next second? There are two answers:

First, there do exist a number of "robo-cops" who abuse their authority. They generally get away with it (unless someone catches them on film), so there really isn't an incentive for them to stop.

Second, and more accurately, is their TRAINING. Police are trained in a way that endorses and encourages deception, violence, a "you against me" mentality, and fear.

In my opinion, there are two basic indictments for police and their activities.

First, the cop who follows the rules is still an oppressor if the rules he/she enforces are immoral/unjust. This is the "nazi" argument. In other words, many nazis did exactly what the laws and rules of Germany told them to do. This does not excuse them from enforcing atrocious laws

Second, the "bad-ass" cop. One of the things taught in police academy is to "always be in control", and this cop does it to an extreme, often going beyond the "rules" and committing blatant acts of racism, excessive force, and a bravado attitude.

Either way, cops spend their time locking up poor people, most of whom have never bothered a soul in their lives. They use verbal games to trick poor people who AREN'T familiar with their rights into giving up such rights through lying (cops are allowed to lie), coercion, and intimidation.

Mike, I just want to make sure I am understanding you correctly. If I am not, please correct me as you have in the past.

Are you saying people who go to prison for drug related crimes, immigration violations, possession of illegal weapons, and theft are not bad people?? I'm sorry, but I don't feel that arresting and sending a guy selling crack in front of a grade school to jail is picking on the poor. I don't feel sympathy for a guy who gets busted selling automatic weapons out of the trunk of his car to kids who in turn use those guns in some kind of crime. If our immigration departments would have done their jobs and made the proper arrests for immigration violations 9/11 may never have happened.

I will not blindly say everyone who commits one of these crimes I listed is a bad person, of course there are exceptions and abuses of the law, but on the flip side it isn't right to label all these crimes as a crime of poverty and somehow imply these crimes should go unpunished because of a persons financial hardships or impoverished upbringing.

But, as I stated above, that's not the case. The fact that people in prison are almost entirely poor suggests that, had they been born NOT poor, they wouldn't have resorted to illegally selling drugs in the first place.

The tremendous discrepency suggests that crime doesn't come from "bad people", but is instead a product of poverty.

By the way, less than a fraction of people in prison for crack were not, as your "law and order" myth suggests, from pressuring or selling to grade school kids. It's from simple possession.

As a side-note, since you mentioned crack and i'm talking about class, have you noticed that when rich white people smoked coke in the 80's it was called "freebasing", and you sure didn't see cops patrolling corporations? When black people smoke coke, however, it's labeled "crack" and called an epidemic.

Also, weapons arrests from people "selling them from their trunk" are also less than a fraction. The overwhelming majority is from simple possession. And yes, owning an illegal gun is a symptom of poverty.

As far as using the gun in an armed robber, I again repeat that only 3% of prisoners are there for agg. assault, murder, or kidnapping. Also, you seem to be missing my point, which is that IF the armed robber would NOT have been born into poverty, they would NOT have robbed the bank. They would live "normal" lives, and wouldn't rob. This suggests that the robber isn't a "bad person", but a person produced by a bad environment.

Finally, and I can't stress this enough, the vast majority of people that cops arrest and harrass, on a daily basis, are victimless, non-violent crimes. White people commit white collar crimes every day that are extremely violent, from labor rights violations to tax evasion, but you don't see cops harrassing suits downtown, demanding to see "what's in the briefcase". No, out of the thousands of laws in this country, the police only seem to daily enforce the few that target poor people and poverty.

This may also be that poor people can't afford good lawyers, one more reason the entire justice system is pretty fucked. The rich get off 'cause they afford good attorneys, and the poor go to prison. Ask OJ.

The original need for military and police type thugs was to protect the haves (who got their wealth off the backs of the rest of us) from the have-nots. But isn't that the point? The rich, by definition, are good, and the poor are bad. We celebrate success the way the Protestants celebrate salvation. Good works are worthless, since the affluent, by virtue of their affluence, are pre-destined to succeed, and the indigent are condemned to fail. This, after all, is the fundamental basis of our Protestant culture, and forms the ethical superstructure of a capitalist economy. The affluent and the indigent are the positive and negative poles of a socially stratified field of (re)production which compels the rest of us to compete against each other for the grace (greed) of God.

The Catholics, on the other hand, believe that good works, in addition to greed, er, grace, is equally essential to salvation. In other words, hard work and greed will eventually deliver us, or our descendants (who in turn deliver us), from the evils of poverty and lead us out of temptation, to eternal salvation. Usually this occurs two or three, or ten generations down the line, if at all, when our descendants assume the requisate modicum of affluence which allows us to enter the hallowed halls of a gated community of like-minded celestial souls.

Mike, can we agree that regardless of a persons economic state when they commit a crime such as armed robbery they do deserve to be punished for that crime?

A.A.C., I do know a few cops (obviously). People I went to school with or spouses of friends and they are good people who do legit work and try to do good. On the flip side to show that I am not completely unfamiliar with the whole good cop / bad cop thing, I had a horrible experience with a police officer a few years ago. If it wasn't for another officer who was on the scene it really might have been ugly for me. However, I did not and do not let one bad experience jade my opinion of a whole profession.

My argument is that you CAN'T seperate class considerations when thinking about crime and punishment. Frankly, I don't think you can seperate a shitload of other things, such as race or gender. Yes, if we lived in a country where everyone was raised in economically/socially equal conditions (i.e. what REAL equal opportunity would be), I'd probably agree that an armed robber, particuarly one who was violent, should be addressed in some way. But that world is a myth.

Although I'm not really comfortable making any kind of generalized statements. Without context, it's just philosophical masturbation, and only further disconnects you from the reality of the situation.

The point is that we live in a capitalist culture, derived from the Protestant work ethic, which assumes that poverty is a crime. The liberals believe that the indigent are the victims of their indigence and ought to be educated or subsidized until they can be integrated into the mainstream of American affluence, and the conservatives believe that the indigent are themselves the criminals and ought to be imprisoned for their crimes and segregated from the social mainstream. I can understand a simple taking him into the station, locking him up, giving a ticket or two. You know, the normal. But beating the hell out of him is an example of police brutality out there. We don't necessarily want to be anarchists but we are people, too. We should be treated with some respect in these situations & not like dirt. THE DET SAW THEM OUT SIDE BEFORE COMING TO MY APARTMENT (THEY WANT MY APARTMENT) AND TOLD THEM SOME BOGUS STORY. WHEN I HEARD DAVE BRING MY NAME INTO THIS INCIDENT AND TELL THE OFFICER HE THOUGH I CALL THEM, THATS WHEN I CAME OUT OF MY HOME AND TOLD DAVE RIGHT INFRONT OF THE OFFICER "DON'T BRING MY NAME INTO THIS. AND THEN THE OFFICER SAID WE HEARD FROM YOU GET BACK INTO YOU HOUSE BEFORE I PUT YOU UNDER ARREST. I TOLD HIM THIS IS MY HOME AND I CAN STAND IN THE HALLWAY IF I WANT AND THAT HE BROGHT MY NAME INTO IT SO I HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO DEFEND MY NAME. I ASKED HIM FOR HIS CARD AND BADGE NO# WHEN I PUT OUT MY LEFT HAND FOR THE CARD HE HANDCUFF ME AND THEY BOTH PUSHED ME INTO MY APARTMENT KNOWING THE I HAD 4 DOGS AND THAT ONE MIGHT NIP. WHEN SHE BROUGHT ME DOWN TO THE POLICE STATION AND SHE WAS FILLING OUT HER BOGUS REPORT, SHE CLAIM THE DOG BIT HER. SHE WAS LAUGHING AND FILLING OUT THE REPORT WITH ONE OF HER BUDDIES. SHE LEFT AND FLAT FOOT CAME IN DET.J MEJIA AND HE SAID "DO YOU KNOW WHERE MY PARNER IS GOING NOW?" I SAID "NO WHERE" HE SAID TO THE HOSPITAL" I SAID THE DOG DIDN'T BIT HER YOU DID. HE WASN'T AT AGE YET. SO I FINALLY GAVE IN BECAUSE HE KEPT BOTHERING ME. I STAYED IN THE CAR AND HE WENT AROUND THE COURNER. SO THE MORON THAT ARRESTED ME WAS TALKING TO HIM AND I SAID TO THE DET. my name is jose im spanish,maybe u cant understand this for my english, but this happenedme.i was in the street at 1 00 in the morning and a police came for my back and he push me against the wall. he thought i was a drug dealer and he was hitting me with that fuckin stick(i dont know in english) and he broke my arm. what did he found?? nothing. i was on the ground with my broke arm, because a fuckin idiot had a brilliant gun... thats what i say... FUCK DA POLICE!!!!!

It makes me sick that no one has done anything to stand up to the pigs. The same thing happened to my best freind in La Grange Park. He had weed and they beat and tortured him for seven houres to make him give them info. Then when they finali sent him to cook they intententuly let him get raped while they watched. First of all cops are cool as long as you dont do something illegal. then they have to do something about it. the suspect in these pictures is not some innocent man he was arrested on several other occcasions. he was mouthing off to the cops and acting like a real asshole. he went to the bathroom and fell. you say the cop hit him but have no way to prove it. to all the people who say these cops are bitchs one thing you should know is that the vetern officer in ex special forces. so you may want to rethink what you are saying because the green berets are the baddest fucking people on earth so fuck all of you who talk before you even know the whole story.
