Press Release
Tuesday, October 12, 2004 3:00 p.m. Portage County Juvenile Court – 8000 Infirmary Rd., Ravenna, OH Court Hearing for custody of the three Al-Jailani children
On Sept. 10, 2004, Marilyn Markovich, caseworker for the Portage County Dept. of Jobs and Family Services, removed Amina, Layla, and Sami Al-Jailani from the home of their mother, Michele Swensen, and placed them in foster care for the third time.
The day before the removal, Marilyn called Michele Swensen and told her that she had discovered that Ms. Swensen had renewed Layla’s passport. Ms. Markovich’s assumption was that Ms. Swensen was taking steps to flee the country. It is not known why she believes this. Three days after the removal, Ms. Markovich stated that the children were removed because Ms. Swensen missed a couple doses of her medication. Since that time, Marilyn Markovich has been removed from the case, and another caseworker, Hope Wagner, has been assigned.
Ms. Swensen believes that Ms. Markovich and DJFS have exercised bias in their decisions to remove the children, based on derogatory statements made by Ms. Markovich regarding the children’s father Ashraf Al-Jailani, the Islamic religion, and Yemen. These issues will be discussed in court before Magistrate Aylward.
At this hearing, temporary and/or permanent custody of the children will be established. The court hearing is open to the public.
