War is Shit
by And Tuesday, Feb. 01, 2005 at 7:43 PM

Feb 1, A recruiting center in Toledo was targeted in the early hours. having its window smashed, a bucket of shit was then thrown in.

War is Shit...

SOUTH TOLEDO -- Anti-war protesters have targeted a local military recruiting office is the target of anti-war protestors. But instead of singing songs or carrying signs, these protesters had a much more pungent way to express themselves. They threw a bucket of manure into the office and painted an obscenity on the wall.

An e-mail sent to News 11 by a group calling itself "War is Shit" claimed responsibility. In its correspondence and its graffiti, the group replaces those asterisks with an obscenity. In its e-mail, the group says, "In a nation fueled by murderous lies, we can think of nothing more appropriate than expressing our disgust in this inappropriate fashion."

The obscene war protest doesn't end there. Graffiti with the same "War is S***" phrase is plastered around the city. One message was left on a building in back of the Arby's Restaurant on Talmadge Road.

Toledo Police are investigating the vandalism. Army Captain William Wedley works at the recruiting office. He says since it is a police matter, he's not commenting.

In regard to your "...lie, lie, lie for the new Rome" comment: Give me a break! I am TIRED of the Left's refusal to accept personal responsibility in ANY aspect of American life. Any person of legal age that doesn't fully understand the potential ramifications of what joining the military may mean is kidding themselves when they then turn around and bitch that "I only joined up to go to college for free". However, I don't really believe that they are as gullible/niave as you claim...I believe that the vast majority of our military is made up of people who want to do something to advance the cause of freedom around the world.

To whit: I am fed up with the Charley Rangel's of the world who claim that these kids shouldn't be going to war since they only signed up for the free college and other benefits. No, I don't want to see our kids dying overseas; however, I believe that, IF YOU ACTUALLY ASK THEM instead of making these assumptions of their unwillingness to do so, you'll find that the vast majority are probably proud as hell of the job that they've done overseas.

Step up to the plate and start utilizing personal responsibility; you might find a little more respect for your cause if you do so.

Everyone I've Talked To
by mike Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at 2:54 PM

Robert -

Your blog suggests people should use more common sense. I suggest you follow your own advice.

I have many, many friends who are enlisted; most of them I know from my college days (they went to either Army or Navy). Every one of them I've talk to said they're in the military because their parents can't afford college tuition. Almost all of them, believe it or not, were also anti-war, particularly Iraq.

Assume? Hey Einstein, you're the one who assumed we don't talk to recruits. You're wrong.

Now it's time for that common sense. Try looking at statistics of the income levels of those enlisted. They are almost exclusively from low-income, working class families. There are practically zero "rich kids". COMMON SENSE would suggest that the overwhelming majority of those enlisted is for economic reasons, not "fighting for freedom". If your argument was true, common sense suggests there would be rich AND poor recruits evenly dispersed since it's not an income issue, it's a "freedom" issue.

There aren't. You're wrong. Try using your brain a little more and your CAPS LOCK a little less.

Robert, bluntly speaking, YOU are full of shit. The military is a cross section of society therefore they would rich and poor would NOT be evenly dispersed. I can attest to this as I am preparing to retire after 20 years in the US Navy. I believe that I have met quiet a few more military people than you and your "many, many friends."

The reasons for joining the military are as diverse as the people IN the military. Your blanket statements show how very little you know about such things. There are too many people on the internet that know alot about their areas. There are also alot of people on the internet that know not of what they speak. Know what your are not before you post what you think you KNOW.

If they only joined for the college they still knew there was a possibility of going to war. If they said they didn't then they aren't very bright and won't be passing any college courses more advanced than Thumbsucking-101.

I realize you may not get this post because I am responding to it months later. Hope you do because life-lessons show up everywhere.

Bullshit.
by Oric Thursday, Nov. 03, 2005 at 8:37 PM

Eric, you're the one who's full of shit. If by "cross-section" you mean to imply that the country itself is also overrepresented by the indigent and the unskilled then you would be right. So what? The point is that the people who stand to gain the most from the occupation of Iraq are the ones whose sons and daughters are grossly underrepresented in the Armed Forces.

One of the first things my drill instructors in Parris Island did was establish that none of their recruits were the sons of Senators, Congressmen, CEOs or any other VIPs.

The chickenhawks in the Bush administration are infamous for their evasion of military duty, or their evasion of combat duty if for some reason they could not avoid military duty, in Vietnam. But these were the same people who rammed an outright fraudulent Iraq war policy through Congress, with no regard for the lives and livelihood of the soldiers they placed in harm's way.

If they're willing to sacrifice the health and safety of other folks' children, then they should be willing to do the same for their own.

But they don't, and you know it.

Been There
by tom Tuesday, Dec. 06, 2005 at 10:10 AM

Eric, Oric, et al.

You seem to have found your place in life - a quiet little corner of the world where your head can be stuck in the sand and all you have to do is listen to your local media outlet to understand what is happening in the world around you.

WAKE UP

The war in Iraq was never about oil except in the minds of the major media outlets. It WAS about saving 25,000,000 from a sadistic dictator who started a war with Iran, who started a war with Kuwait, who has systematically tortured and killed hundreds of THOUSANDS of his "own" people. All while denying them the basic necessities of life - you know things like a safe living environment, education, healthcare, the opportunity to earn a living and perhaps improve on ones standard of living.

Question not the make up of the military but rather accept that they are in fact a pretty good cross section of US society. A better approach would be not to claim that you served your country because you served in the MC (I am assuming that your tour of duty ended 1) honorably and 2) happened within the last five years) but rather to continue service to the country in a productive way .....to quote President Kennedy - "...what have you done for your country?"

No rich kids
by SPO Tuesday, Dec. 06, 2005 at 3:50 PM
scaulen@gmail.com

If there are no richs kids in the military then how do you define the officers? They have to have a college degree, more tehn likely have gone through a military college, and are much higher up on the pay scale then enlisted. So what percentage of the country is rich, (what is the amount of money that makes you rich) and what percentage of the military are officers? Also the who came up with the fact that those in the military are poor to lower middle class? Is that based upon family net wealth, individual net wealth, or what they are reporting on their taxes? If it's based upon recorded taxes then you have to add the living expenses the military is given on top of what they get paid. Sure they don't get paid much, but they don't pay for anything else. Free room, food, medical, dental, clothing, travel, discounts for any on base purchase, free training. It all adds up. So the fact that only the poor are in the military is pure horse shit. The US military today is the smartest most well trained military in history, you don't get that from poor high school drop outs as every one seems to think is going on. Get your heads out of your asses. And throwing shit into a recruiting center is biting the hand that feeds you. With out the military no one would have their freedom of speech or protest. The pen is mightier then the sword because in times of violence the pen can hide behind the sword.

Read Something
by mike Thursday, Dec. 08, 2005 at 11:01 AM

The overwhelming majority of people in the military are from poor families. It's a fact. In the most recent poll, over 2/3 of recruits come from families that make less than the national median (under $30,000). Almost half come from rural areas. Here's one of hundreds of articles supporting this:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/03/AR2005110302528.html

Also, if you think the US went into Iraq to get rid of an evil dictator, than answer me the following questions:

Why did the US support and arm this "evil man" while he was committing his worse massacres during the 80's?

Why does the US continuously support worse dictators who slaughter people, e.g., Pinochet?

Why does the US continuously overthrow democracies and replace them with tyrants, e.g., Nicaragua?

You need to educate yourself instead of letting corporate media tell you what reality is. The only thing more embarassing than buying their stupid shjt is using their bullshit to argue with people on a website.

Next time you make a comment as if you know what you're talking about, at least give us a source for your misinformation. Of course, that would require that you actually read or research something, which I'm not sure you're capable of doing.

Nothing worse than people passionate about their stupidity.

The Washington Post? That’s your choice for an unassailably unbiased scholarly source to back up statements presented in your pseudo-intellectual screed?

"Nothing worse than people passionate about their stupidity."

Great self-assessment Mike.

Arguing on the internet is like competing in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded…

Good Grief, Gonzo.
by Oric Thursday, Dec. 08, 2005 at 9:29 PM

Then you must be the Baddest Mother-Fucker in the Valley.

You confuse "serving your country" with serving the people who think they own the country. And if the people who think they own the country tell you to invade and occupy a country which never threatened our own (because the moslems "threaten our 'way of life'"), then you'll just salute and shout "Aye, aye, sir!"

Well, for once in his miserable, misbegotten life, the Moron-in-Chief got it right. They do threaten our "way of life". For some strange reason, the moslems seem to believe that they ought to control their own territory and the resources which lie beneath it, without the helpful interference of their friendly "allies" who hope to make them an offer they can't refuse. Unfortunately, those resources are essential to the operation of an American military economy. And so our militant American leadership suddenly decides to "democratize" the savages, in order that they might eventually share in our civilized good fortune, after they kill the men, women and children who obstinately impede the process of modernization.

It's not a war, Gonzo. It's an occupation. ("It's not an occupation, it's an adventure.") The war ended several years ago. And the people who occupy the country are the ones who are overwhelmingly working-class stiffs who would otherwise be pre-occupied with the prospect of less appealing occupations. So you throw the dice and hope you hit the point before they ship you back to the gratitude of a grateful nation which couldn't give a shit whether you live or die, or how many "terrorists" you kill, as long as the market continues to churn out the "way of life" to which we've all become accustomed.
