"We hope that, when you think about biting into a Taco Bell taco, you think about the workers who picked the tomatoes in that taco and the sweatshop conditions that they continue to suffer in Florida's fields today -- sub-poverty wages, no right to organize, no right to overtime pay, and no benefits whatsoever"
The Coalition of Immokalee Workers is a community-based worker organization. Southwest Florida is the state's most important center for agricultural
production, and Immokalee is the state's largest farmworker community.
Farmworkers have to pick two tons of tomatoes to make $50 a day.
An interview with a workers from Immokalee, Florida can be heard on the Cleveland Indymedia Radio News Hour. A first hand report on the daily conditions that are being suffered. [6:32 - 22:04]
Organizing began in 1993 and since has grown. "Launching the
first-ever farmworker boycott of a major fast-food company -- the national boycott of Taco Bell". Taco Bell is owned by Yum Brands, the world's largest restaurant company (bigger than McDonald's), which pools the buying power of its five major chain brands (Pizza Hut, KFC, Taco Bell, Long John Silver, and A&W Restaurants) to demand the lowest possible prices from their suppliers, exerting a powerful downward pressure on wages and working conditions in their suppliers' operations. "For workers from Immokalee, the truth about Taco Bell's food begins not behind the counter at your local restaurant, but in Immokalee, where the tomatoes that go into Taco Bell's products are planted, grown, and picked."
As the Taco Bell Truth Tour enters day two and rolls through Atlanta, Nashville, and Memphis, Coalition of Immokalee Workers is very pleased to announce a great new
feature for this year's Truth Tour coverage:
High-quality audio reports which you can download in mp3 format.
Combined with photos and narrative of each day's events -- these
reports provide a multi-media glimpse of what it's like to actually be on the truth tour.
