All Bets Are Off! Support Union Projectionists and Good Jobs in Cleveland - Stay Out of The Cleveland International Film Festival -
These days, nobody in Cleveland wants to own up to anything. Ask the mayor
if she wants Wal-Mart to come to Cleveland and her answer changes depending on which side of Euclid Ave you're from.
Ask the Cleveland Film Society why they're letting their festival
participate in the degradation and exclusion of union workers, and they can't tell
you
the same story twice. What's going on?
A lot of this goes back to Jon Forman and his personal fight with the union,
but this is beyond Forman now. The CFS had an opportunity to do the right
thing. Instead they chose to do the easy thing. The bully has succeeded, and
everybody looks foolish. The commissioners failed to broker an
eleventh-hour deal. The art museum cowered under pressure from Forman and won't be
providing an alternative location. Some of the filmmakers are put in an awful
spot.
So we go back and we do what we've always done: we put it right in their
face.
If you're going to the festival, that's your choice, but think about what it
really means to cross a picket line just to see a movie. Some of us were
raised to NEVER cross a picket line under ANY circumstances, and we won't. We
hope you won't either.
Join us tomorrow (Thursday) at 2 and 5pm outside of the food court by the
walkway at Tower City to mobilize for a picket of the Cleveland International
Film Festival. Channel 19 will be on hand to cover the event. When the
choice comes between what is right and what is easy, some of us will always stand
up for what's right - even if it means giving up our hopes of attending one
of the best cultural events in Cleveland this year. Please stand together
with us.
