Statement of the International League of Peoples’ Struggle for the International Workers’ Day May 1, 2005
The International League of People’s Struggle (ILPS) extends its most militant greetings of solidarity to all the working men and women in all countries on the occasion of International Workers’ Day.
In today’s world, the workers’ and people’s rights are being attacked relentlessly. Conditions of economic stagnation and tightening squeeze on the working people prevail. It is necessary more than ever for the working people in all countries to express solidarity with and to support one another.
Whether in rich or poor countries, the story is the same. The working people in both the advanced capitalist countries and the underdeveloped dependent countries suffer the miseries brought about by the rapacious policy of “neoliberalism” or “free market” globalization. They suffer from mass unemployment, falling incomes, reduced social services, racial discrimination, religious bigotry, repression and so on. The crisis of overproduction brought about by fierce competition among monopoly capitalism in the US, Europe and Japan remains unabated and is plunging the entire world into worsening economic depression. These global centres of capitalism are undergoing financial crisis, severe deficits, growing debt burdens and market contraction.
In order to extricate themselves from crisis, the US and other imperialist powers try to shift the burden of crisis to the workers and oppressed peoples of the world through intensified exploitation. To impose this on the workers and other toiling masses, they resort more and more to repressive measures. In its home ground, US imperialism has instituted measures that curtail the basic democratic rights of American citizens. George W. Bush’s jingoistic outcries have incited racist attacks against Arab Americans, Muslims, South Asians, and other people of colour. Other reactionary governments have followed the beat of the US and are enacting draconian laws purportedly against terrorism but which can be used against anyone and against any association opposed to their oppressive and exploitative policies.
The lone superpower and No. 1 terrorist has continued with its policy of plunder and war. But it is bogged down in Iraq and facing more and more difficulties in Afghanistan. The Iraqi resistance is exposing to the whole world the weakness of US imperialism. Their heroic struggle is showing to the oppressed peoples of the world what a united and determined people can accomplish against the most powerful imperialist country. They are showing to the world that it is not weapons but people that are the decisive factor.
Imperialism is moribund capitalism. It is driving the workers and oppressed peoples of the world to mass struggles and revolutionary resistance. Millions of people worldwide have risen up in protest rallies against imperialist globalization and war. New progressive forces are arising in former revisionist-ruled countries against the restoration of capitalism and the social degradation into third world conditions. There is the spread and growth of revolutionary movements for national and social liberation in various countries and continents.
The ILPS, an alliance of over 300 progressive mass organizations throughout the world, is committed to build the broad international united front against imperialism and all forms of reaction. The ILPS is an instrument of the workers and other oppressed peoples in their struggle against the oppressing and exploiting classes. The workers and oppressed peoples are fighting for a new and better world. They will prevail. # Issued by: Office of the ILPS Chairperson
