*ILLEGALLY-OCCUPIED GAZA*

Netanyahu calls for cutting water and electricity supplies to illegally-occupied Gaza:
http://www.uruknet.de/?s1=1&p=32936&s2=18

(what's more barbaric than collective punishment on the scale that is being inflicted upon Gaza residents? Let's not forget that Israel has illegally occupied Gaza since 1967.)

Israel launches criminal raids into Gaza:

(...after the Mossad/MI-6/CIA likely initiated the escalation by firing off rockets on behalf of "Hezbollah"...)

******HEALTH, SCIENCE and LIVING******

*CASSINI HOAX*

"Saturn's Hyperion: a moon with odd craters":
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap070128.html

(APOD's illustration at the link above is so utterly ludicrous it makes me cry with laughter. doesn't NASA have any quality control regading the fake images it produces of the "Cassini probe of Saturn"?)

*AUTOMOBILES*

EPA's mileage estimates for Hybrids are disappointing:
http://www.wired.com/cars/futuretransport/news/2007/05/hybrid_mpg

(How many GM executives does it take to turn on an electric car?)

*MARIJUANA: WONDER DRUG*

Does Pot cure cancer?

Cannabis compound slows lung cancer in mice:

"The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking marijuana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer..."

(folks, let's all cure cancer by smoking some pot now.)

*TENNIS*

Nadal and Federer to face off in the final at Hamburg:

http://www.atptennis.com/1/en/news/news6.asp
http://www.atptennis.com/1/en

(it is excellent that Federer made this final...perhaps whatever took over his mind has been swept away? perhaps he'll make the French Open final afterall?)

*CINEMA*

Black Book (2006), Paul Verhoeven:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389557/

Black Book is botched, perhaps deliberately so. for the moment i don't want to speculate whether Verhoeven is being paid by the Axis Powers to make a film about the world war II Dutch resistance that discourages audiences from wanting to rebel against authoritorianism.

let's pretend that Verhoeven is merely a mediocre teller of stories. What a film this could have been if it could have had three or four less gun massacres, less misogyny, less gratuitous violence overall and more exploration of the characters.

Carice van Houten is for me the best part of 'Black Book'. van Houten does a very good playing Rachel/Ellis, a Jewish resistance member who is fearless and very quick on her feet. her performance is wasted.

parts of Black Book are as ridiculous as Hogans Heroes. For example, the Dutch Resistance has no trouble driving through checkpoints and into the Gestapo headquarters compound; they even manage to plant a bug in the office of a key Nazi.

it is a pity that a great film wasn't made with source material like this. As it is, i can't particularly recommend it.

if you're looking for good resistance films, see "Kanal" and "Pokolenie", both by Andrzej Wadja.

*QUOTE*

(cited by Fonebone)

Cowards die many times before their deaths ;
The valiant taste of death but once ...

--Shakespeare, Julius Caesar , II ii , 32

...Asked how he came back, Federer said, "You’ve got to give yourself a chance, believe that you can come back."
