*MUSIC VIDEOS*

The Sunday's - here's where the story ends:

(a very pretty song and a watchable video. don't the G-men staffing our nation's 'alternative' radio stations ever want to hear something beautiful like this again?)

*CINEMA: DOUBLE INDEMNITY*

Double Indemnity (1944):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036775/

I've seen 'Double Indemnity' too many times to count. this is top-shelf noir and the best Billy Wilder film i've seen. Edward G. Robinson steals the show as Barton Keyes with gusto. Barbara Stanwyck, in what was a ground-breaking role for women, is a superb femme fatale. Fred MacMurray adds his career-best performance as the tragic Walter Neff.

first of all, let's point out some differences between this film and movies today:

A. none of the key players in DI are particularly physically beautiful. they are superb actors first; visual candy second.

in today's CIA-driven era, no America film is made today with actors with this much fully realized skill. instead, we are given actors who look great but will not inspire us. Sadly, that's by design.

B. in 1944, you can smoke cigarettes and cigars all day in your office. you also smoke in supermarkets and naturally, in homes.

it is amusing how in 1944 you can smoke tobacco like a factory but you can't smoke pot!

C. in 1944, we might not see characters being murdered.

* * *

Double Indemnity comes from such a simple, wonderfully artistic era that it seems almost as if it were from Mars.

watching Edward G. Robinson really plunge and become a dogged claims-adjuster is a unique and priceless film experience.

Stanwyck is 37 in this film. however, with make-up, b/w photography and lots of moxie she is a credible female lead that a man might lose everything for.

one of the few weaknesses with Double Indemnity is the occasionally too melodramatic writing. these moments, along with the countless times it has been imitated, may make Double Indemnity seem dated.

i used to think that Double Indemnity was my favorite noir. now i'm thinking it is #4:

1. Out of the Past;
2. Kiss of Death;
3. Night and the City;
4. Double Indemnity.
