(i'm about a week behind in saying goodbye to a true working-class folk hero. when i was in my teens i was a big Orioles fan and often went to Memorial Stadium. Almost every time i went there I got to see Wild Bill Hagy leading his well-choreographed, drunken O-R-I-O-L-E-S cheer for the bleacher seats. It was awesome, and often preceded magical Oriole rallies.

Hagy was a cab driver, drinker and a Orioles fanatic. one day he got up and drunkenly led a cheer for his fellows in the bleachers. A legend was born. The cheer became a nightly ritual for more Oriole fans than can be counted.

Hagy could have written a book and appeared on talk shows, but he stayed a cabbie and kept a low profile. In 1985, he actually initiated a boycott of the Orioles for banning patrons from entering with coolers--beer. Hagy really valued the idea that the ballpark should be a community festival and not just a constant drain on your wallet. He choose his principles over selling out and stopped going to the games.)
