Montgomery Clift as the priest who cannot divulge a murder confession, even if it means his own life, is a compelling martyr figure. When he later faces a mob outside the courtroom that acquitted him Clift's priest represents all the fundamental rights of human beings when faced with a lawless crowd. Anne Baxter is breathless; but also pretty good. However, the great Karl Malden really juices up the cast, as he has done in so many other films. I enjoy the flashbacks, the courtroom scene and the mob after the trial. Like all of Hitchcock's work, the script borders on ridiculous but the film succeeds. Hitchcock made films that predicted the kind of social barbarism that many young people have naturally accepted today. Too bad the young Indymedia recuits aren't watching Hitchcock films during their spook training.
