NYCLAW ANTIWAR DIGEST -- 12.18.08
by NYCLAW -- New York City Labor Against the War Thursday, Dec. 18, 2008 at 7:49 PM
nyclaw01@gmail.com

Given the recent decision by the 100 or so UFPJ delegates to reject a spring 2009 unified protest against Washington's war and to move away from protest politics that might be seen as against Obama (the future face of Washington's policies), it might be time for the antiwar rank and file that have appeared by the tens of thousands at protests in DC and elsewhere to create a new movement that does want to end the occupations and wars before the end of 2009.

Still Waiting on Obama (and UFPJ) to Do the Right Thing

Given the recent decision by the 100 or so UFPJ delegates to reject a spring 2009 unified protest against Washington's war and to move away from protest politics that might be seen as against Obama (the future face of Washington's policies), it might be time for the antiwar rank and file that have appeared by the tens of thousands at protests in DC and elsewhere to create a new movement that does want to end the occupations and wars before the end of 2009.

CLASS WAR AT HOME

Via The New School in Exile.

New School NYC: Come Occupy a Building with Us . . . Now
We have come together to prevent our study spaces from being flattened by corporate bulldozers, to have a say in who runs this school, to demand that the money we spend on this institution be used to facilitate the creation of a better society, not to build bigger buildings or invest in companies that make war. . . . Come here to join the uprisings and outpouring of passionate resistance currently taking place all over this country, and all over the worlds -- from factory workers in Chicago to students in Greece.

Protester Arrested for Brandishing Shoe in NYC Transit Protest
"I was very much inspired by that courageous Iraqi journalist who was protesting the occupation of his country by the American and British oil companies and their governments."

PALESTINE

Workers in Gaza Suffer Siege
Recent reports by international aid organisations have summarised the humanitarian situation of Gaza's working class under Israeli blockade.

Rottweilers on the Loose in Hebron
Anyone who has been to Hebron and seen the sheer nonchalance with which the army treats daily settler violations of the law will know that this kind of hate-fuelled uprising couldn't possibly emanate from a vacuum.

Palestinians Abused in P.A.'s Jails
Palestinian intelligence agents seized the young factory worker from his home in the middle of the night and proceeded to beat him and suspend him for hours from a hook by his wrists while his arms were tied behind his back.

Obama and the "Pragmatism" of Ethnic Cleansing
To say that Obama had to cozy up to Zionist fanatics in order to be elected may well be true (though it's not a given), but. . . . I doubt that Obama's pragmatists would have been such staunch advocates of electoral realism if they, like the Palestinians, were being removed from their homes and confined to bounded ghettoes.

Revoking Israel's UN Membership
What would we have said if South Africa's Prime Minister, in a similar way, had demanded recognition of South Africa as a "white and democratic state", thus de facto accepting the racist apartheid system that allowed non-whites to be classified as lesser human beings?

Al-Zaidi Still Disappeared
How badly injured Mr. Zaidi was by members of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki's security detail is not clear. He has not appeared in public since his arrest, and his family members and his legal representatives say they have not been permitted to visit him.

Shoes that United Iraq
No one asked after Muntadhar's religion or sect, but they all loved his message.

U.S. Troops Fire on Al-Zaidi Supporters
"We demonstrated to express our support for Muntazar al-Zaidi, but we were surprised with the entrance of the US military," said Ahmed Ismail, one of the protesters. "Unconsciously, we raised our shoes expressing our support for al-Zaidi, but they attacked us."

Generals Already Sidestepping SOFA "Deadlines"
One way commanders say they will try to meet that first deadline is by effectively reassigning combat troops to training and support of the Iraqis, even though the difference would be in some cases semantic because armed American troops would still go on combat patrols with their Iraqi counterparts.

SOFA Whitewashing War and Occupation
The SOFA clearly ends any legitimate claim that America's presence in Iraq is an occupation at all. From the looks of it, the end of the war and the beginning of a long-term friendship look very much the same.

U.S. Kills Three More Civilians
More than one-third of the 4,000 people killed in Afghan conflict in the first eight months of this year were civilians.

Video: Occupation Recruits for the Resistance
"The anti-western sentiment is directly because of the military actions, the civilian casualties, and the lack of respect by foreign troops for Afghan culture."
